Use of Herbs for Insomnia

The use of herbs for insomnia is not a new idea. In fact, a quick trip down the tea aisle in the grocery will show proof of this. There are a variety of “bedtime teas” that contain herbs that are thought to help with insomnia.

While a warm cup of decaffeinated herbal tea is certainly a fine bedtime ritual that can help you relax before turning in for the night, the jury is still out on just how effective the use of herbs for insomnia really is.

Some of the herbs that are thought to provide possible relief for insomnia include chamomile, lavender, hops, passion flower and St. John’s Wort.

As mentioned above, many of the herbs used for insomnia are available in a tea. Most are also available in pill or oil form at many health food and supplement stores.

There are some things to consider before deciding to use herbs to help with insomnia.

It is important to note a difference between occasional insomnia and chronic insomnia. The inability to sleep well over an extended period of time is not something that should be ignored.
Such insomnia can be a sign of a serious health condition or be a signal from your body that some lifestyle changes, such as losing weight or a change in diet, are needed.

If your insomnia is persistent, you should schedule an appointment with your doctor. He will be able to perform an evaluation that may help to pinpoint the cause of your insomnia and help you determine the best way to treat it.

Not all cases of insomnia will require the use of sleeping pills. Instead, your doctor may recommend simple lifestyle changes such as exercise, a change in diet or methods to reduce stress.

If you do decide to take herbal supplement to try and treat insomnia, you should check with your doctor first. This is especially important if you have any type of medical condition or take other medications. Some herbs can interact with prescription or other the counter medications.

If you find that indulging in a cup of chamomile or lavender tea helps you sleep better at night, then it could be the herbs that are helping or it could be the fact that you are taking a few minutes to unwind and de-stress before bed.

Often, simply having a routine, such as a cup of tea at bedtime, can help some people fall asleep faster.

The use of herbs for insomnia may be helpful to some, but it is important to find the cause of ongoing insomnia rather than trying many different ways to cure it yourself.

If you often have trouble sleeping, visit your doctor. He will be able to recommend some additional remedies.

Sleep disorders is usually quite curable by eating certain types of foods that promote sleep. Serotonin is a natural sedative, which the body creates through the help of tryptophan, an amino acid. Eat food that’s rich is tryptophan; for instance, turkey, cheese, chicken, fish, milk, avocados, bananas, and cottage cheese. If you eat tryptophan-rich food before going to sleep, you will be able to get the level of serotonin in the body. At the same time, you must also avoid certain kinds of food that might not agree with you. Avoid processed foods and limit your intake of caffeine and sugar.

People who are overweight understand that there are many possible health issues that can result from carrying around those extra pounds. A link between insomnia and weight gain has long been suspected by the medical community. A 2009 study, conducted by UCLA researchers, confirmed that suspicion and pinpointed the reason for the link.

The body’s hunger impulses are regulated by hormones. Some let the body know when it is hungry. Others let the body know when it is full. There must be a certain balance between the hormones in order for them to function properly.

One reason for the link between insomnia and weight gain is that a lack of sleep distorts the balance between the hormones. This can cause people to feel hungry when in fact their body is full.

Of course, the imbalance of hormones is one reason for the link between insomnia and weight gain, but there may be others.

For example, a person who is sleep deprived is far less likely to put in a vigorous workout than is someone who gets a good night’s sleep. Also, insomnia can cause a general feeling of malaise. That can make it more difficult to take the time that is needed to make proper meals.

Not only is there a link between insomnia and weight gain, there is also a link between insomnia and a lack of ability to lose the extra weight. Studies show that lack of sleep can make it more difficult to shed extra pounds, even when all other factors are equal. The reason for this is still not clear to researchers who continue to study this link.

People spend billions of dollars each year to purchase a variety of diet products, gym memberships and to join diet groups. Those desperate to lose weight are willing to try just about anything if they think it will help them take the weight off.

The link between insomnia and weight gain means that there is a painless activity that can help make it easier to shed those extra pounds. Getting a good night’s sleep on a regular basis will help you to take control of your eating and make it easier to shed those unwanted pounds.

That is not to say that if you start getting a good night’s sleep that the weight will magically disappear. Instead, finding a remedy for the insomnia will be one part of the weight loss equation.

There is definitely a link between insomnia and weight gain. Because being overweight brings the risk of serious medical issues, it is vital that you get the insomnia under control so that you can work toward losing the excess weight.

If you’re in the market for a new career and are seeking something less stressful that still allows you to comfortably make ends meet, there are options. Many jobs offer low stress days with reasonable pay.

One of the most in-demand careers at the moment are Computer Software Engineers. These tech-savvy folks enjoy a relatively low-pressure career while earning a decent salary. Their focus is designing and testing different software programs; anything from operating systems and business applications to computer games…and many do it all from home. Depending on variables, of course, a computer software engineer can expect an annual income of $54,000 to $130,000.

According to the Bureau of Labour Statistics, Civil Engineers are also in high demand. It’s expected that the demand for their expertise will increase by about 24% over the next ten years, making it an above-average occupation. Although they design and build the nation’s infrastructure, they generally do so within teams. As well, they have a few years to design and complete their projects before construction even begins, which alleviates a lot of personal pressure. They also earn a comfortable $50,000 to $115,000 a year.

If you’re looking for something a little more hands-on, perhaps you should be considering physical therapy. Physical Therapists are well respected in the medical field, have flexible hours and are usually self-employed. It’s expected they will be in higher demand over the next few years as the Baby Boomers hit their golden years and encounter physical challenges. With an annual earning of $50,00 to $105,000, you can see there is rarely a dry spell in this field.

Technical writers are also a high-tech, new age group that are in constant demand. These individuals are paid an easy $47,000 to $98,000 a year to write about newly released gadgets, programs and toys. As companies release technical products, technical writers are required to review and transform the language into a simple consumer language. They may face tight deadlines, but technical writers usually enjoy flexible days and a quiet work environment with a 20-second commute to their computer. This is another job that sees most people working from home.

If something even more relaxed, and possibly even part-time is what you seek, how about a massage therapist? These are generally extremely low-pressure jobs that ensure self-employment and even working part-time. Due to many factors in this field, an annual salary can be whatever you like. On average, a massage therapist will charge around $30 an hour. If you chose to take on many clients, you could easily earn $45,000 or more a year.

There are plenty of rewarding career options available. Human behavior can affect not only the sleep quality but also the ability to fall asleep.

Eating increases your metabolic rate as well as your body temperature, which are critical factors in natural sleep. Body temperature dropping is conducive to good sleep. This explains why you should not eat at least three hours before going to bed. A high body temperature prevents you from falling asleep, not to mention the bloated feeling that may bother you if you eat too much before bedtime.

You may also have experienced sluggishness after a heavy lunch meal, but that doesn’t mean you can actually go to sleep or sleep well. The explanation is that a heavy meal causes your brain to divert energy from your muscles to work with your digestive system. This may disrupt your brain activities, and thus preventing you from sleeping well.

It is better to eat smaller meals than to eat one heavy meal with one or two light meals in between. Eating too much at one meal stresses not just your digestive system but also your brain.

Your eating behavior also includes the types of food you consume during the day. Cheese, for example, is said to give nightmares because it contains tyramine, an ingredient in cheese that can elevate blood pressure. MSG (monosodium glutamate), a taste enhancer in most restaurant cuisines, may cause digestive upsets, heartburn, and headaches, which often interrupt sleep. Yellow tartrazine (E-102), often added to fizzy drinks, candies, and cookies, may increase hyper-activity that may prevent you from falling asleep fast. In short, if you eat unhealthily, you tend to have sleep problems.

Many seniors have erroneously believe that if they drink too much, they need to frequent the bathroom more often, and thus may affect their sleep patterns. However, dehydration may adversely affect the brain, and hence the ability to sleep well at night. To remedy the situation, drink at least two liters of water a day, and drink it early in the morning so as to avoid bathroom trips at night.

To sleep well, avoid smoking or drinking an alcoholic “nightcap.”

Nicotine may relax your body and mind, and make you fall asleep. However, once the nicotine is metabolized, it will wake you up in the middle of the night. Research studies at the University of Pennsylvania indicated that smokers took twice as long to fall asleep as non-smokers. To sleep well, quite smoking.

Drinking alcohol may be habit forming. If you have emotional problems, then you must deal with them, instead of using alcohol to obliterate them. If you really need a drink before bedtime, substitute your alcoholic drink with a hot milky drink or herbal drink.

Physical activities, which expand the natural range of movements, may help you sleep well. If your body remains too long in any one position, tension builds up in you muscles, and physical stress causes restlessness that prevents you to sleep well. Do pre-sleep stretch exercise to relax muscles to make you sleep well.

Meditation is an effective way to calm the body and mind to prepare you for natural sleep. Meditation releases any blocked energy that you may have inadvertently attached to any thought; by uncluttering the mind, meditation helps you let go of any restless thoughts that prevent you to sleep well.

If you have sleep problems, maybe your behavior is the culprit. A change in lifestyle goes a long way to help you sleep well.

A lot of working mums will agree that balancing a great career and a happy family life can mean bringing the weight of the world on their shoulders. The idea of a taxing career and kid to take care of at the same time can exhaust the air out of any woman, particularly those who do not know how to relax after a long day at work.

Mums easily shun away from the thought of taking a breather even after being advised by online life coaching experts. For many, there just isn’t enough time for one. However, what most do not know is that it doesn’t take much to get a real, invigorating break. In fact, this article will tell you that there are many stress-relieving activities that you can squeeze into your busy schedule—and they don’t even take longer than ten minutes!

1. Be a bathing beauty.

Never underestimate the power of a warm bubble bath! This is a tried and tested recipe to relieving one’s self of the stress after a long hard day at work. Grab a bubble bath cream of your choice and prepare yourself a nice, soothing bath. Light some scented candles and play soothing music in your bathroom. Immerse yourself in your warm watery bliss and let the soapy water wash all your tension away!

2. Indulge your sweet tooth.

You might have been watching your weight every since you gained your pregnancy pounds. Now that you have made it to having a baby and keeping your job, it’s high time you reward yourself. Yes, it’s the opportune moment to have your dessert fix! Treat yourself to a tub of your favorite ice cream or take your brownie mix from the cupboard and whip yourself up a delightful tray of heavenly chocolate fudge. Forget the calories. Tonight is the night you will follow your sweet tooth’s desire.

3. Have a power nap.

Lunch break or coffee break? Instead of lingering in the office cafeteria after your meal or going over to the vendo machine, try staying inside your cubicle for a quick power nap. Many women have learned through professional coaching that this short siesta can do wonders for you. Catnaps can up your energy to a level you have not anticipated.

4. Phone-a-friend.

Making a short phone call to a trusted pal is not only beneficial in game shows but in your life as a working mum as well. Dial your friend’s number and engage in a brief chat. A bit of communicating can later leave you feeling happy. It will also lift up your spirits if you get to share the challenges of work and motherhood with a friend who is in the same boat with you. You will learn that you are not alone in your journey and this will definitely keep you positive and encouraged.

5. Keep a journal.

Having a journal is not just for teenage girls. This is even more beneficial for working mums who greet each day with a lot of new happenings. Immortalizing your blessings and challenges through the written word will make it possible for you to go through them in the future and thereby help you appreciate the things you have accomplished and the events you have been through.

These are only a few of the many ways by which you can lighten up the load of motherhood. Professionals who specialize in coaching for women assert that it is important to always have a “mom time,” even if it is just ten minutes a day. This will make a big difference in your everyday life as a working mum.

Anxiety and addiction are often found together. We instinctively try to escape from uncomfortable feelings by turning to drugs, alcohol, cigarettes or food to soothe us. All the while, we may not be aware of what we are feeling or may not know how to handle it.

There are many sources of stress in today’s world that we need to learn how to deal with rather than try to escape from.

The whole of life is about adjusting to changing circumstances. There are many things that cause stress, such as:

1.changing weather conditions

2.noise levels

3.other peoples’behaviour

4.financial problems

5.family conflict

6.death

7.adolescence

8.menopause

9.illness

10.lack of sleep

11.cultural and religious demands

Our own thinking also adds to our stress and anxiety levels especially if we have perfectionist tendencies.

As a first step forward to stopping anxiety and addiction, it is vital to get appropriate nutrition, rest, exercise and adopt a relaxation process such as meditation or deep conscious breathing and positive self-talk.

This is easier said than done for people who find themselves hurtling through life at the speed of light, burning the candle at both ends and grabbing another coffee or piece of chocolate, just to keep going. The question we would be wise to ask ourselves is why we feel we have to keep going at breakneck speed, no matter what? Where are we rushing to?

Some ways to deal with anxiety and addiction are:

1. Slowing down. When we slow down, we can notice how we are feeling more easily, breathe and calm down, rather than unconsciously put another cigarette in our mouths.

2. Schedule a set time to worry. Keep a notepad with you and each time you notice an anxious thought, write it down to take to your worry time. You can set a timer for 10 or 15 minutes and this can be your worry time. When the time is up, do something that is fun.

3. For people who have a generalized anxiety and no specific worries it is not a wise idea to have a worry time. Rather, watch a funny video and laugh or read some jokes to relax tense muscles. Laughter actually reduces the stress hormones in the body.

4. If you do have worries, writing them down will remove them from your mind and help you better manage them. Learning how to plan, problem-solve, set goals and prioritize them will reduce your anxiety level, rather than feeling overwhelmed and turning to addiction as an escape.

Anxiety and addiction need not take over our lives. Maybe we just need to learn some management skills to help us better deal with the stresses in our lives.

Stressed?

Some people say life is stressful. It can be. It often isn’t – unless you make it so.

Like a crack addict, some people create drama in their lives to get an emotional high. Once the high subsides, the person Finds Excuses And Reasons (F.E.A.R.) to create more drama – perpetuating the emotional high.

Does this sound like you?

Even a little?

If so, you may be addicted to stress.

Here’s the thing…..

Events in and of themselves do not create stress. It is the meaning you give to these events that causes the stressful reaction. What you have something mean about you or your possibilities is what spins you into a cycle of reactive stress – or a calm deliberate thought process that leads to a healthy outcome.

There are two ways you react to stress: emotionally and physically. Emotional reactions to stress are as varied as there are perspectives on any of the events of your life. The bodily reaction to stress triggers, however, is more hardwired.

Here’s what happens ….

Under stress your adrenal system releases hormones and adrenaline. In a positive state, your brain releases a chemical known as dopamine that makes you feel positive. These are chemical reactions that the body can become addicted to.

If you are a stress addict you will unknowingly create drama in your life where there is no cause just to get the chemical high – beginning with how you think. Your thoughts evoke chemical reactions in your body.

The top 5 signs you are Addicted to Stress are:

1. Chronic lack of ability to focus
2. Overwhelming desire to maintain routine
3. Habitual Procrastination
4. Overall lethargy
5. Persistent negativity

Physical exercise is a great way to relieve stress. When you physically exert yourself, the body releases chemical substances similar in nature to opiates. You get a feel-good high.

As the lemur said in the movie Madagascar, “I like to move it, move it. I like to MOVE IT!”

Find ways to move around more in your daily life. Try using the parking space farthest away from your destination. Walking is a great way to get your feel good blood flowing.

Reaching for a newer and better perspective is my all time favorite stress alleviator. The new way of perceiving a situation gives rise to positive thoughts, transmitting chemicals that make me feel good about myself and what I can do to overcome challenges.

Rise to the occasions of your life. Get off the addicted to stress treadmill.

We live in such a fast paced world that we sometimes forget that our health is something that we need to be concerned about. We get so busy with family, friends, our jobs, our fun that we even forget to eat, or we eat on the run.

Do you feel tired or run down? Do you just pass it off as loss of sleep? When you are young maybe you can get away with that excuse, but eventually it will catch up with you. The quality of your life begins early, and is set in motion by what you do as a young child.

Certainly you have heard that you need to build a house on a solid foundation, but have you ever thought about that with what you eat or drink, or generally do to have good health, and to feel well.

Your life can be improved by doing a few simple things. Our body is composed mainly of water, so the easiest way to improve your wellness is by drinking lots of water. With so much pollution, clean water is harder to come by, but you can still find pure sources of water.

One reason that we need water is because of the oxygen content. Our body needs oxygen to live, and it has even been discovered that cancer cells cannot live in oxygen, so maybe the easiest way to prevent cancer is to drink lots of clean water.

It also helps to live where the air is cleaner, and has a higher level of oxygen. If you cannot, then you need to have a lot of green plants, because the chlorophyll takes the carbon dioxide in the air and turns it into oxygen. Therefore, if you want more energy and feel better, drink more water.

Try having a glass of water every hour, and see if your energy levels do not jump. Your stress and anxiety levels should also go down. Sounds like a pretty easy solution for better health and wellness.

Another quick way to better health is to eat your vegetables. How many times have you heard that? But have you ever been told how good chlorophyll is for you. That is why you need to eat your green veggies.

You probably were never told to eat green vegetables, because chlorophyll has more than a hundred minerals that the body needs. Being deficient in a necessary mineral can make the body sick. If you do not like eating vegetables, an easy way to get them is through juicing.

Owning a good juicer is an easy way to provide for good health, but you have to use it. You can experiment with the vegetables, and fruits to get a juice that you like the taste.

Your health will improve with the better nutrition you are getting in the juice, and also with the bad drink that you no longer need to have. Get your vitamins and minerals through fresh juice.

Another simple way to better health and wellness is through exercise, a dirty word to a lot of people. There are lots of ways to get exercise. The easiest, and maybe the best, is just to go walking. You can start at a comfortable pace, and distance, and increase either at your own choice.

The important thing is that you start, and that you keep doing it consistently. Once you get into the habit of doing it, you will miss it when you are not able to do it. Good habits are as hard to break as bad habits.

One of those things that people do not think about is that sweating allows poison to come out of your body. Getting rid of the poisons in your body is always a good thing. You do not need to go to a gym to get your exercise, but sometimes it is easier to get on an exercise program when you sign up for a class with friends who are also motivated to better health.

You can do yoga, pilates, aerobics, dance-ercise, water aerobics, or numerous other choices. There is some exercise that will fit you. As long as you remember that the end result of your exercise is better health, and a longer quality life, then it should be easy to stick to your program.

Look at all of the elderly people you know who would live their lives differently if they could.

By using natural health means, you can improve your life for today and for the future. Change your thinking, change your life. Change what you eat, and change your health. Although their popularity has surged in recent years, herbal remedies for insomnia have been in use by Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioners for well over a thousand years. Although some herbal remedies for insomnia will use single herbs for sedation, TCM practitioners often use combinations of a variety of herbs in order to blend different healing properties that address different aspects of sleep disturbance.

For example, while herbs like valerian and its Asian cousin, patrinia provide sedative effects, sedation is not the only means of aiding restful sleep. As an example, sleep apnea, which is often due at least in part to obstruction of airways by congestion and phlegm production, is a very common cause of disrupted sleep. For this reason, a more complete Traditional Chinese herbal insomnia remedy will contain herbs such as poria to reduce phlegm production along with sedative herbs and herbs with other sleep-enhancing effects.

Pain is another common cause of sleep disturbance, and can cause restlessness even in people using sedative herbs or drugs. It is for this reason that herbs such as Szechuan lovage root are often added by TCM practitioners to an herbal sleep aid to ease pain and promote comfortable sleep.

Another common source of sleep disturbance is poor digestion. Gas, bloating, and heartburn can greatly disrupt sleep, so Traditional Chinese Medicine herbalists will often add herbs like licorice root to herbal remedies for insomnia in order to calm the digestive tract.

As with the examples just discussed, TCM herbal remedies for insomnia typically address multiple factors in sleep disturbance. Combinations of herbs with a variety of properties are used to address the various factors in poor sleep, and often provide better results than herbal or pharmaceutical sedatives alone.

Although TCM is rapidly becoming more popular in the West, the recently reported incidents of contamination in products from China, ranging from pet food to toothpaste, have left many Westerners hesitant to use herbal remedies produced in China. This is very unfortunate, because TCM herbal remedies often provide superior results with minimal side-effects due to the skillful balancing of a variety of herbs in each formula.

The good news is that a few companies are now producing sleep aids and other herbal products using Traditional Chinese formulas in the United States.S.. Now the benefits of these time-proven Traditional Chinese Medicine remedies can be achieved without consumers being exposed to the risks of toxins sometimes found in Chinese-made products.
